Healthy blood pressure, healthy heart
High blood pressure – also known as hypertension – affects one in five Canadians. It is the number one risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease, so it is very important that it is properly controlled. The good news is that you can also prevent it by following the DASH diet that’s low in sodium and being physically active on a regular basis. Read more about blood pressure. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, then you may wish to sign up for the Heart&Stroke Blood Pressure Action Plan.

Erin Staal, Stroke Strategy Coordinator with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick takes the blood pressure of Premier David Alward and Minister of Health Madeleine Dubé in an effort to highlight the importance of knowing your numbers and to communicate to the public the importance of prevention.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick is pleased to have received support from Vitalité Health Network, Horizon Health Network and the New Brunswick Pharmacists’ Association in promoting activities for World Hypertension Day. Blood pressure clinics have been set up in the following communities across New Brunswick today in a fantastic effort to promote this life saving awareness day.

What is World Hypertension Day?

World Hypertension Day has been established to highlight the preventable stroke, heart and kidney diseases caused by high blood pressure and to communicate to the public information on prevention detection and treatment.
“Hypertension is complex, and its management is critical to dramatically reducing the odds that a patient with high blood pressure may suffer a heart attack or stroke.

For patients with hypertension that have other conditions (e.g. diabetes), their blood pressure goal may be lower than 140/90mmHg. In healthy people, blood pressure is considered at goal at 120/80mmHg.. Patients should discuss their individual blood pressure goal with their physician. For more information on hypertension, please see the accompanying Hypertension in Canada Backgrounder.
