The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick thanks Mark and his team for an amazing demonstration of an active and community minded organization that is making a difference here in this province.

This past August and September, 1000’s of participants took part in the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick’s BIG BIKE RIDE FOR HEART making 2011 an amazing year! Celebrating living healthy in our communities, Leaders with Heart, big bike event days and organizations across New Brunswick took part in this team-spirited event that raises money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick (HSFNB) and helps increase awareness of heart disease and stroke. 

Teams gathered for event days across this province, and created an atmosphere that embodied community spirit. Our East Point Shopping event day gave an opportunity for people to share in the fun, spirit and excitement of the Big Bike. Families gathered to watch entertainment, play games and bid on the silent auction that had fantastic items donated from local companies. The day was fun for the young and young at heart with activities like face painting, inflatable bungee runs and basketball with some of the Saint John Mill Rats. Teams were warmed up all day before their ride by the YMCA to energetic music and some great Zumba moves!

A new event this year in the province was the Spin for Heart Challenge held in Quispamsis. Spin instructors from the local GoodLife Fitness lead a team challenge to see who could raise the most and pedal the fastest. The teams went on a bit longer route for an added challenge and included a 1 kilometre drag race. The riders had a great time and enjoyed the extra element of Big Bike competition. The teams worked hard and afterwards enjoyed some healthy snacks and lots of water when they finished their rides. The 8 teams did an amazing job and raised over $17,000!!

Another highlight was the 5th annual Leaders Ride For Heart in Moncton. Leaders in the community each raise $1000.00 each or couples raise $1500.00 to take part. Brian Murphy, MP Chris Collins, sponsors Medavie Blue Cross, Fenety Marketing, RBC, Subway and Direct Energy, representatives from TD Canada Trust, Lounsbury Group, Zachary & Samuels Men fine clothier and riders Anne-Marie Picone-Ford, Russ Mallard, Dr. Ravi Kancharla, and many others pedaled together as leaders in downtown Moncton raising awareness and invaluable funds!
