$100,000 Investment for Defibrillators Designed to Save Lives

Saint John, July 19th, 2010 The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick (HSFNB) announced today a $100,000 contribution to the Heart & Stroke Restarta Heart – Restart a Life campaign from the Government of New Brunswick and the Department of Health. This commitment will purchase a minimum of 25 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and cover the cost of related training for New Brunswick public facilities and high schools over the next year. “Our government is committed to supporting projects that will improve the quality and accessibility of health care, and help save lives in New Brunswick,” Health Minister Mary Schryer said.

“We are pleased to support a campaign that distributes life-saving technology and training throughout the province.” The objective of the Restart a Heart – Restart a Life campaign is to secure funding that will enable the partners to distribute AEDs throughout New Brunswick through an application and selection process, i.e., community centres, hockey arenas and other public gathering places. The HSFNB has been soliciting donations from the public and the corporate sector to achieve this goal.

“Today’s announcement is another step forward to providing New Brunswick residents with better health care”, says Dan Connolly, HSFNB Chief Executive Officer. “We recently reached our goal of 100 AEDs placed in the province since the launch of this campaign in 2008, and this pledge from the government will boost our program and send us well on our way to having 200 AEDs in place by 2011. The HSFNB commends the initiative of the Department of Health for their commitment to ensuring AEDs are readily available in more and more public places.”

The HSFNB estimates that there are about 1200 people in the province who experience a cardiac arrest each year outside a hospital setting. Approximately 95 per cent of those people don't survive as the first few minutes of a heart attack are critical and damaging if no help is forthcoming. Studies show that defibrillation within three to four minutes after a heart related incident results in a survival rate of up to 70 per cent when used with immediate CPR.

"The foundation will also continue its leadership role by raising the funds to ensure that AEDs are placed in all communities throughout New Brunswick through the Restart a Heart, Restart a Life program. We believe that defibrillators should become as common as fire extinguishers because they are just as powerful in the fight to save lives," added Mr. Connolly.

“New Brunswick EMS is pleased that the Government of New Brunswick is supporting our partnership with the HSFNB to help build a cardiac safe province”, says Alan Stephen, New Brunswick EMS Chief Operating Officer. “The NB EMS Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program will assist the HSFNB in determining where these new AEDs should be installed and train personnel to use them. Should an emergency occur, facilities with AEDs and trained personnel will be able to intervene quickly which is essential to improving survival rate.”

The placement of AEDs is coordinated in partnership with the New Brunswick EMS Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program. This program manages site selection, training and linkage to all emergency services. New Brunswick EMS (NB EMS) is a subsidiary of Medavie EMS, a member of the Medavie Blue Cross group of companies who manages land and air ambulance services in the province of New Brunswick.

Defibrillation saves lives!

In New Brunswick alone, approximately 1,200 cardiac arrests occur annually in out-of-hospital settings. Having a defibrillator available can improve the chance of survival for a person having a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) from 5% to 50% if delivered in the first few minutes.

We’re putting life-saving AED’s in more public places in your community.

On August 20th, 2008, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick (HFSNB) launched the Heart&Stroke Restart a Heart, Restart a Life campaign in partnership with the New Brunswick EMS Public Access Defibrillation program (PAD) to help improve the survival rate after sudden cardiac arrest in New Brunswick.

The objective of the campaign is to secure funding that will enable the partners to distribute Automated External Defibrillator’s throughout New Brunswick through an application and selection process i.e, community centres, hockey arenas and other public gathering places. The HSFNB will be soliciting donations from the public and the corporate sector to achieve this goal.

In 2008 the campaign received a very generous donation from its Premier Sponsors Medavie Blue Cross and The Frank Cowan Foundation of $50,000 each which solidified a great start to this life saving initiative.

The New Brunswick Relay Run for Heart is an annual fundraiser supporting the Restart a Heart Restart a Life campaign. The Constable Bruce Hadley Relay Run for Heart honors the memory of an RCMP officer from Bathurst New Brunswick who died tragically of a sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 32. He sadly left behind a loving wife and two small children. As an RCMP officer, he touched the lives of many people and for these reasons, his family, friends, and co-workers have decided to organize and participate in this annual event where all proceeds go towards the Restart a Heart Restart a Life campaign.

This fundraiser has been successful in raising over $160,000 in just two short years contributing to the placement of approximately 40 AEDs in northern New Brunswick communities.
