Presented in 2009 by:

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick hosted its third annual Workplace Wellness Conference on April 23rd at the Crown Plaza in Moncton. Special Keynote speaker this year is Dr. Larry Ohlhauser who provided an interactive session that educated, encouraged, empowered and best of all entertained all those who were in attendance. The conference also had the pleasure of featuring Keynote Speaker Billy Strean, an expert on applying laughter and humor to help people be more engaged and have more fun, while producing extraordinary results in their workplace.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick’s goal for this conference is for participants to be provided the opportunity to exchange ideas, strategies, and techniques that will help create healthier workplaces, as well as help organizations to enhance performance, well-being, and increase productivity

Along with the Government of New Brunswick and the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick, the partners  once again presented workplaces in this province the Wellness at Heart Award for 2008.

The History

On April 24, 2007, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick officially announced the establishment of a partnership with the College of Psychologists and the New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport in formulating a recognition award for New Brunswick businesses that implement initiatives to promote workplace wellness.

Researchers have found that employees who enjoy good overall health are more dedicated, have higher productivity, miss less work and are more likely to state that they are happy with their career choice and current job. To encourage the development of organizational initiatives to promote psychological wellness, the CPNB is putting its expertise toward the establishment of a recognition award to be called "Wellness at Heart Award"

The objective of this award program is to recognize organizations that seek to help their employees live healthier lives both at home and in the workplace. All businesses in New Brunswick are eligible for this recognition award if they can demonstrate that they have implemented initiatives to reduce smoking, to increase physical activity, and to promote sound nutrition and psychological wellness. Awards will be presented on three levels, gold, silver and bronze, maximizing the opportunity to showcase businesses that demonstrate evidence of initiatives in the abovementioned areas in both quality and quantity.

Increasingly, it is recognized that the workplace itself has a powerful affect on people’s health. As a Foundation we are dedicated to working with employers in this province to make changes that will have a lasting effect on the health of New Brunswickers. We already know that Wellness Programs improve morale, reduce absenteeism, and add to the health and longevity of each participant. These programs are instrumental in keeping people on a healthy living path, especially in environments where the employees are sedentary for significant portions of the day.

The future success of organizations in New Brunswick is dependent on having well-qualified, motivated and healthy employees. Healthy Living program initiatives convey the message to employees that the company cares about them as individuals, not just as workers, and the company values the service they provide. This increases the overall morale of the workplace and therefore, improves the bottom line. "Achieving A Healthier Workplace".

An organization that recognizes employees as a competitive advantage and seeks to create an environment that supports and promotes health is what distinguishes the exceptional company from the average!
