Our Mission and What We Do The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living, and advocacy. What We Do The Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick is a volunteer driven health charity dedicated to reducing the death and disability from the number one killers of Canadians - heart disease and stroke - through research and health promotion activities. The enormous generosity of the people of New Brunswick has led to the allocation of more than $24 million over the past 34 years to scientific research and health promotion - enabling research breakthroughs in science and technology and the development of innovative health promotion programs. Advocacy Advocacy at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick takes place on many levels. We work with health professionals and encourage them to use and study new Foundation research findings that will benefit New Brunswickers. We are also active with other organizations in promoting health lifestyles. Working with committees like The Smoke-Free Environment Task Force allows the Foundation to work with other health charities and organizations for a common goal - healthier New Brunswick hearts. Research Research the Foundation funds must first go through a national peer review process that determines the scientific merit of the research. This peer review process ensures that only projects of the highest standards of excellence receive the funding that is given in trust by the Heart and Stroke Foundation donors. This year, thanks to our volunteers and donors, we have been able to support 12 research projects that will continue to unlock the mysteries of the human heart and brain. Health Promotion The fruit of the Foundation-funded research is knowledge that now fuels many of our health promotion activities. Today, in addition to research funding, we recognize prevention as the key in the fight against heart disease and stroke. We are committed to providing significant funding to support health promotion initiatives that teach the value of healthy lifestyles and early recognition of heart disease and stroke. These activities place us front and centre in large and small communities across the province. Programs like Heart to Heart, a rehabilitation program for heart patients and their partners, and its counterpart Partners in Stroke Recovery; Hearts in Motion walking program and Jump Rope for Heart, an educational program that helps elementary students get active and learn about healthy lifestyles are placing New Brunswickers one step closer to the Foundation's dream: a future free from heart disease and stroke. Equipping people with the knowledge and skills to deal with a cardiac emergency or stroke through the Foundation's Emergency Cardiac Care programs are helping people save lives. Fundraising Gifts the Foundation receives from donors and volunteers each day enable us to continue our work in communities across New Brunswick. Every dollar the Heart and Stroke Foundation receives touches peoples' lives whether it's a new medical breakthrough, current information about heart disease or stroke, or a helpful hand in a Partners in Stroke Recovery program. There are many ways to support the work of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. A donation at the door-to-door campaign or at your workplace, participating in a special event such as the Big Bike Ride for Heart or Jump Rope, or an In Memoriam donations in memory of a loved one or friend, or a planned gift such as bequests through wills and insurance policies are all ways you can choose to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick.
